How to become a tax agent in Australia
To become a registered tax agent in Australia, you need the right qualifications, TPB approved courses and relevant experience gained under a registered tax practitioner's supervision. Then you apply to the Tax Practitioners Board. Platinum helps with each step, while you build your own practice.
What do you need to register as a tax agent?
The Tax Practitioners Board sets the requirements, and the exact pathway depends on your qualifications. In general, you need:
- A qualification: usually a degree, diploma or other recognised qualification in accounting or a related discipline.
- TPB approved courses: in Australian taxation law and commercial law.
- Relevant experience: gained under the supervision of a registered tax practitioner. How much you need depends on your qualification.
- Fit and proper: you must meet the TPB's fit and proper person requirements.
- Professional indemnity insurance: you must hold, or be able to hold, cover that meets TPB requirements.
The TPB determines eligibility for every application, and its website sets out the full requirements for each qualification pathway, including a tool to check your qualifications and courses.

How does Platinum help you become a tax agent?
Platinum brings education, experience and practice together, so you don't have to put the pieces together yourself.
Education
Platinum Professional Training (RTO 41438) delivers TPB approved agent courses.
Supervised experience
You build relevant experience on your own clients, under the supervision of Platinum Accounting Australia as a registered tax practitioner.
Your own practice from day one
You don't have to wait for your licence to start. Your returns are reviewed and lodged under Platinum's registration while you work towards your own.
What does supervision look like at Platinum?
Supervision at Platinum is hands on and documented. Each piece of tax work comes with workpapers, timesheets and a record of client conversations. Prompts in our system guide you through every step.
A single return can go back and forth for review five or six times before it's lodged. You learn on real work, and your experience is on record when you apply to the TPB.
What about becoming a BAS agent?
Platinum Professional Training also delivers TPB approved BAS agent courses. For many bookkeepers, BAS agent registration is the first step before moving into tax work.
